All quilt block designs have a name. Some are traditional, some vary with region and maker, and some are uniquely individual to the creator. In the case of my Grandmother Story Quilt the names of the blocks relate to a personal story for 20 of my many grandmothers. Some date back to the Revolutionary War period. The topics range from domestic life, family and travel to community and war, so that these women’s stories provide a small window into the fairly typical lives of American women before the 1950’s.
After extensive family research and genealogical study, it was a disappointment to keep the names and facts of their lives on pieces of paper in a file folder. And usually the written record tells more about the men than the women. The quilt stories attempt to relate my grandmothers to the time and place in which they lived. My goal is to encourage others to ask questions and gather their family stories and pass them on.
Everything is illuminated by the past.
