The next block for the Grandmother Story Quilt is this traditional pieced block pattern called Broken Dishes. I have not assigned it to a specific grandmother yet. There was Sarah, who came to the mountains of East Tennessee from South Carolina before 1880, or Dorothy, who, after the American Revolution, left New Jersey by wagon, and then traveled down the Ohio by boat to Kentucky. My idea is that a woman traveling to a new home, would of course take her dishes. The hardships of travel, especially primitive travel by wagon, horseback or boat would put the dishes at risk for breakage. And yet, if they were wrapped in linens and quilts, it was worth the risk to have beloved dishes that were a connection to the old home.
