Schoolhouse block

This is the first block that i made for the Grandmother Story Quilt.  Each square will be 10 inches when finished.

Grandmother Frances (my mother’s mother) grew up on a farm in May’s Lick, Kentucky, out in the country in the northern part of the state, not far from the Ohio River.  She was born at nearly the end of the 1800’s.  She, and two sisters, Lillian and Mary, were the first in their family to go to college.  When all three girls were ready to go, they went together to Hamilton College, the women’s part of Transylvania University, in Lexington, KY.  It was an eventful time:  her sister Mary died of a burst appendix and Frances met her future husband.  It was said that once she got to the city, Frances never wanted to live on a farm again.  My mother, June was her only child.
