This is the basel rosette of the mullein plant -soft, fuzzy leaves.  As it matures, a tall stalk with yellow flowers comes out of the middle.  I harvested a big sack of leaves last Saturday at the Farmer’s Market and did a dye batch with wool cloth.

Here is the color of yellow that i got after adding alum and cream of tartar to the dye bath (after simmering the leaves for an hour).

I used a previously died yellow piece to tie up with fresh osage leaves folded up inside, and threw in some iron, which made the gray.  I was trying for a leaf print, and sort of got that.  Will keep trying.
